Home Connect: The first solution in the world that allows for more than one brand of household appliance to be controlled through one app

Belek/Munich, 25 April 2014. Variety is a typical part of consumers’ everyday life: 90 percent of households own appliances made by more than one brand. At the same time, consumers want their appliances to be as flexible and as easy to use as possible. With Home Connect, BSH Bosch und Siemens Hausgeräte GmbH more than meets these requirements. It is the first solution in the world that allows multiple appliance brands to be controlled through one single app. Project Leader Dr Claudia Häpp is presenting the Home Connect app today at the IFA 2014 Global Press Conference in Belek, Turkey. In her presentation “One app. For you.” she demonstrates how the solution has been precisely tailored to the real needs of consumers in their connected everyday life, and how it will continue to incorporate these in its further development.

More and more consumers are using smartphones and other mobile devices as control cen-tres for their daily life. In Germany alone there are over 36 million smartphone users, while the number of technical appliances that connect to the World Wide Web is rising at breakneck speed. This opens the way to a wealth of new services, and Home Connect is precisely adapted to the customer’s needs. The website, the Home Connect app and the first con-nected appliances from the Bosch and Siemens brand families will be presented at IFA. The app is being launched with functions rated particularly important by customers in BSH market research: It enables the remote operation and monitoring of different brands of connected household appliances. In addition to this, the Home Connect app can be used to access extra offerings that complement appliances, such as, for example, an extensive collection of recipes and other services.

A reputation for consumer-oriented solutions

Home Connect is based on widely-adopted technologies: A smartphone and a Wi-Fi router are all that is needed to use the free Home Connect app to operate connected household appliances. Users register online with a valid e-mail address, and data is exchanged between the app and the connected household appliances using the Home Connect protocol. Only the most necessary data is stored on the dedicated Home Connect server – and it’s stored anonymously.

“Consumer-oriented solutions are our trademark. This is true for all Home Connect services as well as for our approach to data protection, which is based on maximal transparency: We only use consumers’ data for the continual improvement of our services when they have given their express consent. On a technological level, we have collaborated with selected partners to develop a comprehensive security concept”, explains Dr Claudia Häpp. Further-more, the Home Connect app’s security will be certified.

A continually developing range of services

Home Connect is conceived as an open platform that will continually develop to offer an in-creasing range of services. IFA 2014 is just the start of this: In early 2015 the app will be made available for Android phones in addition to iPhones, from autumn 2015 additional con-nected appliances from the brand families will be put on the market, and late 2015 will see a further roll-out of Home Connect. “We are going to further tap the potential of our connectivity solution, one step at a time,” says Häpp.
